About this site

DIY Finance is an independent publication that exists solely to educate individuals on the benefits of increasing their knowledge of personal finance, especially for young people. This site was created and is administered by Dalton McIlrath, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™.

The truth is that the lack of education on this topic has led and continues to lead many 20 and 30-somethings down a path of missed opportunities and harsh lessons learned. We are certainly living in uncertain times, and without a plan of action for your financial future you may fall victim to the traps that many others are exposed to year after year.

According to a study published by Nationwide, the average 30-year-old has only ~$62,000 in retirement savings. Without a significant uptick in savings, many Millennials and Gen Z'ers will continue to push their realistic retirement age further away. Many of the ins and outs of financial planning for younger people are incredibly straightforward and can be achieved without the need for out-of-pocket financial advice.
